About YMP

The mission of the Young Musicians Program is to identify musically gifted students who cannot afford the specialized training essential for the development of their innate abilities, and to provide them with a comprehensive music education, academic reinforcement and personal guidance, on a full scholarship basis.

A Message From Our Director

Dear Visitors,

Welcome to the website for the Young Musicians Program at the University of California, Berkeley.  We encourage you to stay a while and sample the music and the wonder of YMP.

Founded in 1968, with just twenty students and three volunteer teachers, YMP has grown into one of the leading music training programs in the nation with eighty-five students and fifty teachers.

Each student comes to us with an untold story and an unsung song.  Through the YMP experience, a student’s potential for greatness is identified and developed by pursuing academic and musical excellence, tempered with an ongoing process for personal growth.

Our multi-talented students represent over sixty middle and high schools from four counties in the San Francisco Bay Area.  The high-quality training that a student receives propels them into leadership roles in their schools’ music ensembles as well as the area’s youth orchestras, bands and choral ensembles.  Wherever they go and whatever they do, the YMP light shines through them and affects positive change in performance and circumstance.

We thank you for visiting the site and hope that you will monitor it regularly and attend our special events and concerts.
