WHAT IS YMP?
YMP is a music training program for talented 5th through 12th grade students who want to excel in music but who are not able to afford private lessons or specialized training. Participants, selected on the basis of musical potential and financial need, are provided with free musical instruction during the summer and school year.
A scholarship program limited to 70 - 80 exceptionally gifted youngsters from low-income families, YMP provides preparatory training for students who plan to go on to college and professional careers. Participants must be willing to devote extensive time and energy toward their musical studies.
WHO IS ELIGIBLE?
Students between the ages of 9 (current 4th graders) and 17 (current 11th graders) are eligible to apply. Students must be US Citizens or US Permanent Residents, live in the Bay Area and meet low-income eligibility guidelines. Students at all levels are encouraged to audition; advanced technique is not a prerequisite.
HOW DO YOU DEFINE LOW-INCOME?
The income guidelines YMP uses to determine eligibility for the program are calculated from the Federal Poverty Guidelines as published in the Federal Register each year. Guidelines for the 2008 Summer Session are printed below:

Reading the table: Eligible income is the maximum amount of gross income (the adjusted gross income amount from your tax form) for a household of the corresponding size. In other words, if there are 5 people in your household, there would have to be a combined income of $44,641 or less supporting all 5 people for a child in that household to be eligible for YMP.
HOW DO I APPLY?
Students are accepted once a year. Applications are available in early January and must be postmarked by March 1. Applications are first reviewed according to age, residency and income eligibility guidelines. Eligible applicants are scheduled for an audition on either day of the two day audition period. Audition times are assigned by the YMP office based on faculty availability. Applicants should reserve both audition days until the YMP office notifies them of their audition time. Normally, there are approximately 125 students applying for 12-14 spaces. Once accepted, participants are elegible to continue in the program until they graduate from high school. It is expected that committed students will achieve a skill level that enables them to attend the college of their choice.
WHAT HAPPENS AT THE AUDITION?
Applicants are judged on musical potential, as determined through a series of exercises designed to test the applicant's ear, as well as on demonstrated skill on the instrument.
When you arrive at Morrison Hall on the Berkeley campus, you will check in and be assigned a room for warming-up. When your turn comes, you will enter the audition room. Auditions are private; family and friends are not allowed in the audition room. Your audition is heard by up to 5 people: the YMP director, the YMP administrator, and members of the faculty. Each audition is 10 minutes long and consists of: the student playing a prepared selection, the previously mentioned series of ear-testing exercises, and a survey of the student's skill at scales and sightreading by a faculty member. We strive to make the audition environment as relaxed and cheerful as possible, as we understand how nerve-wracking auditions can be.
WHAT IS THE SUMMER SESSION?
Though YMP is a year-round program, the most concentrated period of activity occurs in the summer. The Summer Session is an intensive, seven-week program of daily music classes. All summer activities take place in the Music Department on the UC Berkeley campus. Daily attendance is mandatory.
During the summer, each student receives individual instrumental or vocal lessons, as well as instruction in piano, theory, musicianship and composition. S/he will also sing in chorus and perform in one or more ensembles (including brass, jazz, string, piano, vocal and woodwind). Students may also opt for one or two elective courses such as: History of Gospel Music, Opera/Musical Theater Scene Study, Latin Percussion, Composition, Computer Music, and Conducting. All instruction, music, breakfast, lunch, weekly recreational activities and AC Transit tickets for transportation are provided. Students who successfully complete the Summer Session are awarded scholarships to continue weekly private lessons during the school year.
WHAT HAPPENS DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR?
Students continue taking weekly private lessons from October through May. During that time there are several academic year recitals, an annual senior recital, and master classes. Attendance at all events is mandatory. YMP also presents a noon concert in the spring as part of the Hertz Hall concert series.
A few chamber ensembles, such as string quartets and jazz combos, continue rehearsing during the school year. Select students and ensembles perform throughout the year at outreach concerts, where they represent YMP in the community.
HOW MUCH DOES YMP COST?
YMP is a full-scholarship program. All instruction and supplies, music, breakfast, lunch, weekly recreational activities and BART/AC Transit tickets for transportation are provided at no cost.
